There is nothing greater than an emcee who is hungry and trying to rise.
From the opening track and on, you can hear that Cozz is frustrated with his current spot in hip-hop. He wants to be great and wants to be the greatest that ever lived, and that is all a pure hip-hop fan can ask for from their artists. From the intro song titled "Questions" you can hear Cozz offering his frustrations to his listeners as a ton setter for how hard and direct he will be rapping on this project.
From track to track there is purpose, content and confidence. A true understanding presented by Cozz of the subjects he wants to tackle and an audio journey through the things he has been going through since he surfaced on the lower mainstream level of rap.
There is a relatability from Cozz to the everyday person trying to make things happen in their life. Taking away the mystique of being "on", Cozz makes it his business to let his listeners know that just because he is signed to Dreamville and has a little buzz, does not mean he has his money where he wants. Usually what we get from most upcoming artists is the exploitation of being distant from the public and using that to fabricate their current state of living for more pop appeal. But Cozz, stands away from that purposely to let you know that he is dedicated to give you the real and most true reveals of himself, which is so refreshing.
He rides every instrumental like it will be his last time to spit!
There is not a track on this project that goes to waste, with a lack of effort. Cozz gives you the same energy from the top of the project all the way to the end, even with songs that are meant to be chilled. You can tell that even with the songs that are meant to be laid back, there is no let up for Cozz. This is all meant to continuously tie into the fact that he does not feel he has made it in any capacity. Expressing his relationships with friends, echoes the same sentiments of most artists on their way up with dealing with whether or not they can trust the intentions of those around him.
The best thing about Cozz is that he does not try to force being "deep". He says what he is trying to say as direct and concise as possible, sort of along the lines of the approach of the late great Tupac Shakur in his later years. This makes for a feeling of realness, than is beyond trying to get people to be hooked on a vibe or lyrical prowess, but just more focused on if you relate and feel this shit. That is what sums up Cozz. He is all about feeling and relating. Not the bars or the flow patterns that usually stands as the things that most people use to pick their favorite emcees. Ultimately this makes for a project that even if you don't say it is great, you can not hate on it because the content in the project showcases what is happening to Cozz and the everyday person who is trying to grind and achieve greatness in whatever endeavor they are partaking in. This album is a must listen for 2018!
