Is the Grammy a Non-Achievement

The grammy trophy has become more of a popularity prize than an award for putting out quality music.

It is apparent that the committee for selecting the winners for these awards are people who are not versed in the many genres the Grammy's choose to celebrate and award. Year after year we see countless misrepresentations in selecting the winners for certain categories that you start to feel as though these things must be just a joke.

For years we have known that the Grammy's is suppose to be the highlight celebration for the creme of the crop. To even be nominated was just as much of an honor as winning the award. However, in recent years when it comes to the nominations, you have started to scratch your head and just start to say things like "how did this person get nominated' or "really, this album", and things along that line of thinking. Making watching the Grammy's an intriguing thing in itself but not for the right reason.

You use to tune in to see what great artist would trump the great works of other great artists. It would be a thing where you could make a compelling argument for every nominee. Now it has gotten to a point where some categories seem so blatant for one artist to win that you are now just trying to see if the Grammy committee would just mess it up like they did when Macklemore beat out Kendrick Lamar for Best Rap Album. Not to dismiss the fact that it seems to have created such a lazy process to where if one song or album wins in one category it is almost guaranteed they will win in countless others.

However, I must admit that as a viewer of the Grammy's I scratch my head to decipher what exactly creates the difference between "Song of the Year" and "Record of the Year". Along with asking the criteria for one to be nominated for "Album of the Year" and what it takes to win the award. If things are solely just based on record sales then a lot of artists should not even receive nominations, let alone win an award. The same could be said if nominations were given out solely on the craftsmanship and quality of the music being brought to the masses as recording art. Time after time the Grammy experience seems more and more about the nostalgia of what the award use to mean. You think about the great artists who have won before and just use that as the catalyst for why the Grammy is still the biggest award for music.

Putting that nostalgia aside and viewing things now for what they are, the Grammy award just starts to feel like a resume builder, rather than the goal of the resume, and as long as you peak and stay hot at the right time you will win! If this is so, then the Grammy is worth just as much as a platinum single in this music streaming era. Just numbers and calculations that could be inflated and have no merit, but because it is there and meets the quota it must be recognized as such and awarded.
