Nas continues to shine as being one of the greatest rappers of all time! The album was mostly produced by Hit-Boy and it turned out to be a great collaboration between himself and Nas.
The album showcases Nas's ever-going attempts to challenge himself at rapping over more modernized production, while maintaining the integrity of the hip-hop culture that oozes through his veins. A lot of the problems that people had with his previous work Nasir was that although the production was coming from the great Kanye West it appeared that Nas was a little out of place over the production. It really felt like Nas was trying really hard to rhyme over the Kanye West aesthetic.
But with this collaboration it felt unforced and Nas seemed to fit right onto everything like a glove. His style, rhyme flow, cadence and delivery was laced all throughout this album in classic Nas form. It was like a heavy weight fighter who is still showing that at age 37 he has at least 5 to 7 more years of prominence left in him. Throughout the project Nas tackled subjects of race in America, the downfall of men being confused with greed and money, to the anguishes that comes with falling in love, and leaving you with the always understanding that hope and perseverance go hand in hand in any major accomplishments you want to have. It was a typical Nas project.
But that's the issue. As above mentioned Nas is the heavy weight prize fighter, but this album showed that he is at a stage in his career where he can draw a major card but not necessarily win the fight. This album was good, but it wasn't great by any means. A lot of the hype around this album is due to it coming from Nas, and secondly in 2020 with this type of year and with the state of hip-hop being what it is, this album serves as a major refreshment and nostalgic hope for how some hard core hip-hop fans wished rap was today.
This album was safe, simple and easy for Nas to perform on. That's not a bad thing but it does not make me feel that Nas is ready to challenge himself as an emcee, because he is building his own label and laying the foundation for his own empire that he is not willing to fail for the sake of creation. That is fine but it leaves me disappointed. Nasir was a good attempt for Nas and I was hoping he would work to develop that more but he quickly went back into his safe zone with teaming up with Hit-Boy on this project.
All in all it was a good project but ultimately that at this time in Nas career King's Disease is not good enough.
