As much as I wanted this album to be great, it was just good, and being just good is not good enough.
With all that Meek has been through, I wanted more from meek on this album. I mean to be honest the album cover looks more like a mixtape than an album cover, and the more and more I listen to this album I begin to get the mixtape feel. I feel like this was a very safe project for Meek and that bothered me.
When I say safe, I mean that it was created to be commercially successful. Now granted Meek is fresh from out of jail and probably needed to recoup money he missed from being incarcerated, but that made me as a fan want to experience an album of being in Meek's heart and head. I wanted to hear Meek's inner thoughts and feelings all throughout the album. I didn't want the lady cuts. I didn't want the radio singles. I didn't need the political anthems. I just wanted to know how Meek felt about everything that has happened since he started his infamous beef with Drake.
I wanted to hear Meek voice his frustration for being an Emcee who writes his material and get beat (as far as public opinion goes) by a guy who has other writers and uses reference tapes for ideas. I wanted to hear about what it does to a man's psyche to be a millionaire in the same place you were when you didn't have a penny to your name. I wanted to hear about who was extending a helping hand when he was down from his rap peers. I wanted to know who called and talked with him in concern for Meek the person and not Meek the artist.
Instead I got an album full of radio friendlies, features from almost every major industry artist (relative to being a collaborator with a meek project), a few introspective tracks, and some club turn ups/stripper anthems. All of this concedes to creating a project safe for an investment return. It provides a little something for everyone and everybody. It has the least amount of risk. It is like making a bland dish so this way you don't have to worry about harming anyone that suffers from food allergies. You let everyone else take your base dish and spice it up how they like. This way no one hates your dish but it's still not the best dish in the house. This album was that bland dish, but everyone could find their seasoning to make it enjoyable.
