Anderson's Ventura is definitely focused on his songwriting ability over all things. This is not a referendum on the musicianship, artist performance or any of the latter. All of those things were on display as well, but you could tell that Anderson was focused on being able to tell stories, simplify his songs, be catchy and not corny and just make music that could last like the music I'm sure he grew up listening too.
The power in this album was all through the words which reminds me of the songs during the times of Hitsville! And fitting enough Anderson had the songwriting guru of Hitsville, Smokey Robinson on his album on the second track, which helps to emphasize even more that songwriting was the emphasis for this project. Oxnard was full of overpowering rhythmic production, where it was not about being simplified to just having a groove. Ventura being the follow up was the exact opposite. The production on Ventura was all about groove, and when you have a groove you can't ruin it.
This album was laid back and very chilled so the words were on display and in full effect. Every song was masterfully written to follow the groove that was created, to work with the instrumentation, and nothing contrast. The words fit perfectly for the chosen melodies, and the vocal performances did not come off stressed or having work hard to do what was required. That made this album a really easy listen and enjoyable.
This album is a perfect for this coming spring and summer season, seeing that it is all about love, and starting over. It's about revival and seeking rejuvenation. Contains the light and feathery production that works well for in home dancing, outside picnics and family gatherings. All in all Ventura came at the right time and continues to show the growth that Anderson is going for!
