Protege or Prodigy?

Dreamville's hired gun is shooting for more than just the stars. He wants it all and he wants it now. DiCaprio II was an album all about JID displaying his array of ability in rapping. That was all this album was here to prove.

It definitely lacked the musicality and story that his first album was here to give as an introduction for the new star on the rise. It is clear that with this project JID was out to prove that he is one of the best rappers in the game right now. Even stretching to say that if anyone wanted to challenge him on that he is hoping and wishing for that smoke. The song with J. Cole "Get of my D***" was Cole's way of telling JID that Cole is still the god, but that he acknowledges that JID is coming. Similar to how Jay-Z passed over his Roc-A-Fella chain to Cole, this was Cole's way of acknowledging who under him he felt had next.

Ultimately JID with this album is here to let everyone know that Dreamville is not to played with and to be respected. He is the labels lyrical assassin. Like Kendrick is for TDE, like Pusha is for GOOD, and so on and so on. At this point in time the rap game is missing the level of competition that we thought we were going to get after Kendrick put the rap game on freeze with his infamous control verse. Since then we have gotten some beefs but they were more mainstream beefs and won or loss through numbers and album logistics. JID is here to say forget the numbers, who wants the smoke as an Emcee. Ultimately trying to coax all into putting the pen to pad and bringing that energy back into the game.

The concept of who really wants the crown of being the best rapper or emcee in the game is what is inspiring this album. Accompanying that is the new found success that JID is accepting and dealing with but keeping in perspective that he has not made it. He has a good start but the run has just begun and that goes on and on through this album relaying stories of the expectations people have of him due to thinking that he is "on" now. Of course he discusses the usual feelings of paranoia for the being the one who "made it", and that will forever be a story for rappers to tell when it they just make it.

However, now that we know that JID wants the spot he has to now understand that there is a resume that must be built from this point on. We know you can rap and that is abundantly clear all through this album, but now he must learn to put together the hits necessary to garner that acclaim he is looking for. And being at Dreamville is the best place for him to be. An artist like Cole who doesn't care for mainstream but understands it is necessary to have those accolades rot cement that spot can help to mode JID into that artist who can have the numbers and respect all at the same time. Not clear yet if JID is a prodigy, but he is definitely the understudy that Cole was seeking.

Congrats to JID and Dreamville for another solid project!
