Revenge of The Dreamers III Review

Revenge of the Dreamers III by the Dreamville family was easily one of the best compilation albums in hip hop history. Personally, I think the Cruel Summer compilation by G.O.O.D Music is the best compilation in hip hop history, but this was easily second and viable for first position.

The beauty of this project was in its simplicity. The goal was to give the Dreamville roster every opportunity to display their talents and showcase their skill set in rap, songwriting and song creating. Track by track the Dreamville artists showed how they all meshed together even with being their own individual artists. They sounded like a family rather than just a group of artists on the same label roster. It was clear that these guys make a lot of music together because their chemistry was all throughout the project.

This was even more proven by the fact that they were able to seamlessly add non-roster members to this album and not blow it by songs sounding like someone didn’t belong. Credit goes to the Dreamville management and production team to understand that in order for this to be pulled off they would need to have a week sit-in for studio sessions and allow their members to mesh and create with outside artists so that songs would be made cohesively.

The project however, had some moments where you felt the intensity and the steam of the album was loss. The album started off so hip hop heavy, in your face and then proceeded to become more laid back and r&b-hip hop.

I honestly wish they would have decided to make this compilation in the format that Drake made his “Scorpion” album. Revenge of the Dreamers III should have had a Side A that consisted of all heavy hip hop beats and spitting and then a Side B to incorporate more melodic beats and R&B. Although it did not happen there were plenty of great songs laced all throughout this project. Due to the length of the project and the disparity between high intensity and low intensity the personal playback volume for this album in its entirety is not to high. There are however a multitude of songs with high playback volume, and easily on repeat status.

All in all with the lows of 2019 when it comes to the hip-hop albums that were released the Dreamville Revenge of the Dreamers III was much needed and appreciated!
