"Kamikaze", a perfect title for exactly what this was when it comes to the career of Eminem.
There comes a time in the career of every great person that they should reconsider if they still have "it". And whatever that "it" is, they have to be honest with themselves in deciphering if it is still present. With that honesty must come the appropriate decisions and it seems like Eminem is not ready to have that conversation, or is unwilling to accept that others may just be right about him at this current point in his career.
The flows have become annoying, the bars are becoming desperate attempts for sour faces, and the content is becoming regurgitating.
Don't get things twisted, Eminem is still good. It has just come to a point that an album from Eminem is not worth the listen, but a feature will always be ear craving. Why do I say this? Well, Kamikaze showed me that these days Eminem has nothing really inspiring him to put pen to pad anymore, because he is now at a point of his career where he needs to make an entire project to attack those who attacked him. Maybe it is because he is far removed from the pain and struggle of the trailer park. Maybe, it is because he has gotten pass the pain and sadness of his best friend proof dying. Or it could be that he has already proved that he can hold his own with some of the heavy weights of the rap game and no longer has a need to prove he belongs, because Hip-Hop has accepted him as just an emcee and not the "white" emcee.
In a condense manner, Eminem has nothing left to strive for.
Only accepted white rapper: check
Multiple platinum albums: check
Classic Hip-Hop Album: Marshall Mathers LP, check
Most selling rapper of all time: check
Top 15 lyricist of all time: check
Obviously arguable, Eminem however has cemented himself in the conversation for the G.O.A.T.
So why make Kamikaze?
It is clear that this is purely an album made out of damaged pride. Eminem could not sit back and read, see, and hear people saying he has fell off or that he didn't make a good album (and this is reference to Revival). Thus you get the clap back album, which takes me nowhere quickly. I get a few tracks like the opening where Eminem is just spazzing like always, skipping to the track with Joyner Lucas that is completely fire, and after that I personally begin to cringe. But again, outside of some of the hooks just being horrible, all of the songs just feel like I have heard them before, which just leaves me pushing skip over and over again searching for some more fire or something new.
Ultimately a lot of these older legends need to take a page from 3K. Leave when your legacy is unquestioned and become the most desired feature ever!
